CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

Chloe made a necessary phone call home, but dialed Brooke’s number since she was the one most likely not to give her a hard time about leaving the way she did.

The text messages that her brothers had sent her were pissing on her choices but laced with concern for her well-being. No one knew she was extending her stay, and they wouldn’t until after the retreat.

“It’s indescribable,” Chloe told Brooke. Truth was, it had rained most of the time she’d been there, and she hadn’t ventured very far. “Very lush.”

“What part are you in?” Brooke asked.

“I’ve been in Kuta, but I leave this morning for the retreat, which is north of here.” Kuta was busy, and inexpensive. Then again, she’d discovered that everything in Bali was dirt cheap. Yeah, you could spend a lot if you wanted to, but for the budget traveler, you could find a bed for twenty bucks a night. Not just a bed, but one with a pool and views of the rice fields. Although those were everywhere.

“I can’t wait to hear all about it when you’re back.”

“We’ll have plenty to talk about. Listen, I called because one of the goals of this retreat is to unplug. It’s the reason I took everyone off my location. Salena knows where I’m at, and if there’s an emergency, she will get ahold of me. Can you make sure everyone knows that?”

“Absolutely. We all need to do that once in a while.”

“Thank you. And tell Luca to keep me off the schedule. Coming here has opened my eyes to a few things.”

“Are you having a Julia Roberts moment?” Brooke teased.

Chloe watched the falling rain. “Not yet. But I’m looking for it.”

Brooke paused. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. Send my love to everyone. I’ll call next week.”

“Enjoy.”

“Ciao.”

Chloe ended the call and looked at her phone.

Several messages from Dante had come through right after she left.

Where are you?

Are you okay?

We need to talk.

Call me.

She ignored them all.

Her family knew she was okay, Salena knew exactly where she was. In turn, Dante knew she was safe, and as a lifelong friend, that’s all she owed him.

Chloe had one more call to make before she truly turned off her phone for the week.

Salena’s phone went to voice mail.

“Hey, baby!” Chloe put cheer in her voice that she had to fake. “As promised, I’m unplugging for seven whole days. I have never done this. My location tracker will be on, but unless I leave the retreat, my phone will be off and in my room. I only plan on leaving the retreat twice with the group. Thanks for being the buffer for my family. I owe you. I know you’re dying for details, and I’m sure I’ll spill them all, but right now I need to do this. Anyway . . . I’m rambling. Love you.”

Chloe hung up and tossed her phone on her bag.

She’d spent a week in Bali feeling sorry for herself.

That needed to change.

Gathering her belongings, and double-checking every drawer and closet, she worked her way out of the room.
